ANL Measuring Procedure

The ANL measurement section is divided into a measuring mode and an edit mode.


Measuring Mode and Edit Mode:

Go Button disabled: Edit Mode

  • The <go> button is not pressed. In this mode, all other buttons in the selection bar are accessible and can be selected.
  • No sounds are presented.
  • Curves can be entered or deleted.

Go Button enabled: Measuring Mode

  • The <go> button is pressed.
  • A measurement is enabled, starting, or still running. In this mode, all other buttons in the selection bar are gray and cannot be selected. This means that all other selections are locked during a measurement.
  • An audiometric measurement can be performed. The audiometer is enabled.



ANL in the Edit Mode:

Click on the diagram field to enter values. The ANL value adjusts itself according to the BNL and MCL levels entered manually. For example manually enter the patient's MCL (60 dB) and BNL (55 dB). The program will automatically calculate and input the patient's ANL (5 dB) (Figure 187).

Right click on the screen to open the ANL context menu:
  • Delete item: deletes the clicked point.
  • Delete this memory: deletes the active memory.
  • Delete all: Deletes all memories in the ANL measurement.
  • Change nothing: no changes are made.


ANL in the measuring mode:

  1. Speech is presented (an audio book for example) to the patient to establish his/her most comfortable level (MCL).
  2. Once the MCL is established, speech is played at the established MCL level in the presence of background noise. The background noise is adjusted in level to determine the point at which the background noise can no longer be increased in level and is considered "tolerable" to the patient.
  3. The ANL is calculated by calculating the difference between the tolerable noise level and the MCL. 


Speech or background noise levels changes can be made with the mouse or the arrow keys:

Decrease level of the speech signal.

Increase level of the speech signal.

Increase the level of the background noise.

Decrease the level of the background noise.


To communicate with the patient during testing, interrupt the presentation using the space bar at any time (a different key may be designated for interruption, refer to Setup Menu).

Turn OFF speech signal and background noise signal.

Turns OFF speech signal.

Turns OFF background noise signal.


Level Control on the ANL Basic Screen:

Refer to the Level Control Meter to monitor the levels being presented through each channel. The values on both sides should alternate between -8 dB to -6 dB (Figure 188).
